80th Annual Awards Banquet
2008 Trophy Winners
Aikman Dance Progress Cup: Awarded to the member of the Buffalo Skating Club who has, in the opinion of the selection committee, shown the greatest amount of progress in the art of ice dancing during the skating year. In order to qualify as a candidate for the cup, each individual, 14 years of age or over, must pass at least one dance in any dance bracket during the current skating year.

Archie Deckop Figure Trophy: Awarded to the member showing the most progress during the season. This should be demonstrated by his/her ability, interest and improvement in figures with the intent of raising the standard of skating in the club. Note: Due to the limited availability of figures, skaters showing progress in MIF can be nominated here. Winner:

Buck Trophy: Awarded annually to the member of the Buffalo Skating Club regardless of age, who in the opinion of the awards committee, has shown the greatest overall progress in the area of moves in the field, freestyle and dance during the current skating season. Winner:

Lewis F. Cody Trophy for Free Skating: Awarded annually to a Buffalo Skating Club member, 12 years of age and over, whom has shown progress in free skating during the current season. This award is given in memory of Lewis F. Cody. Winner:

Women’s Activity Free Skating Trophy: Awarded annually to a skater, 12 years of age or under, for outstanding progress in free skating during the current season. Winner:

Women’s Activity Junior Dance Trophy: Awarded annually to a skater, 13 years of age or under, for outstanding progress in dance during the current season. At least one dance must be passed. Winner:

Basic Test Progress Trophy: Awarded to recognize outstanding progress amongst basic test skaters. The winner of the award will have skated no more than one and one-half seasons, and be 12 years of age or younger. The trophy will be awarded to the skater who has passed the most badge tests and/or the preliminary test but not higher. The skater MAY NOT have a program. The skater’s progress will have been achieved primarily through lessons. Winner:

Wilkinson Award: An adult award for outstanding service in promoting dance, or ANY club related activity over a period of time. Winner:

Piper Cup: Awarded to an adult member of the Buffalo Skating Club who has shown definitive progress in ice dancing, and who has promoted that form of skating during the club season. Winner:

Abrams Achievement Trophy: Awarded to a Buffalo Skating Club member based on a point system. Points are awarded for tests passed in moves in the field, dance, free skating, and pairs (where appropriate). Points are also given for competitions entered and placement (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in the competition. Winner:

Leadership and Service Award: Awarded to a youth member of the Buffalo Skating Club who has demonstrated exemplary service and volunteerism to the club and club sponsored activities. Winner:

The Bainbridge Cup: Beginning in 1998, this award was presented by the board of directors in honor of Red Bainbridge, a long time coach with the Buffalo Skating Club. Each year, the Bainbridge Cup is awarded to a Buffalo Skating Club member who is new to skating and who has demonstrated the most progress and enthusiasm for skating during the current season. This cup can be awarded to a maximum of two individuals who have been club members for three years or less. Passing US Figure Skating tests is not a requirement for this award. Winners:

Wallace Keller Friend of the BuffaloSkating Club Award: Awarded annually to a member or supporter of the club, regardless of age, who outwardly shows a joy and appreciation of the art of figure skating. This appreciation of figure skating can include assistance to skaters on or off the ice, volunteering time and energy for Buffalo Skating Club events, supporting and promoting the club in its service to the skating community, or any combination of these. Winner:

Janet R. French Character Award: Sponsored by Martha Rasmussen in honor of Janet R. French. This trophy shall be awarded annually to a Buffalo Skating Club home club member. The recipient shall demonstrate exemplary character traits, such as compassion and respect for others, embracing responsibility, and empathy. Winner:

Buffalo SC Presidents Trophy: Awarded to a club member or supporter who has provided outstanding service to the club within the current year. Winner:

Frank Owery Award: Sponsored by the Board of the Buffalo Skating Club. This trophy is awarded to a skater who demonstrates sportsmanship, dedication, participation, and personality to the sport of figure skating. Once chosen, a recipient is not eligible for 3 years. Voted on by members under the age of 17.
